
Renewable Energies/Structured Finance
NORD/LB has been financing renewable energies since the mid-1990s and has since done pioneering work worldwide, particularly in the area of wind turbines. It is now one of the leading international financiers in this field. The financing portfolio of the Structured Finance business segment has a positive effect on achieving development goals No. 7 "Affordable and clean energy" and No. 13 "Climate Action", as it contributes to increasing the share of renewable energies in the global energy mix. This business segment certainly has further potential in terms of sustainability. For example, the bank already offers financing for new hydrogen technologies; but wind farms with modern storage technology will also be of increasing relevance. In the period until the breakthrough of new technologies, NORD/LB finances "bridge technologies" which ensure the functioning energy mix on an interim basis. One example of this is gas-fired power plants, which burn fossil fuels to generate electricity, but which are only used to buffer the energy demand peaks that cannot be supplied by renewable energies, or not in a timely manner.
In the Structured Finance business segment, the bank contributes to development goals No. 4 "Quality education", No. 6 "Clean water and sanitation" and No. 9 "Industry, innovation and infrastructure" - usually together with public or private promoters in the context of ensuring
