Thomas S. Bürkle new Chief Risk Officer of NORD/LB
The Supervisory Board decided in its meeting on Monday to appoint Thomas S. Bürkle as the new Chief Risk Officer of NORD/LB. Mr. Bürkle is currently the Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Hypothekenbank, a subsidiary of NORD/LB. He will take over from the outgoing Chief Risk Officer, Dr. Johannes-Jörg Riegler, on 1 January 2014.
“Thomas Bürkle is an excellent and experienced manager who has demonstrated his extraordinary talents in many top positions within the NORD/LB Group and in various locations worldwide. With his wealth of experience, he is a valuable addition to our Managing Board,” explained the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of NORD/LB and the Minister of Finance of Lower Saxony, Peter-Jürgen Schneider. “Thomas Bürkle represents the continuation of our proven conservative risk strategy, which has contributed to the bank coming through the financial crisis unscathed. With the optimisation of RWA management, he himself has made a valuable contribution to our risk policy.”
The 60-year-old graduate economist began his career in 1980 at Berliner Bank AG and worked for several companies in Thailand, the Czech Republic and Germany before moving to the NORD/LB-Group in September 2002. Here he was the Chairman of the Managing Board of the former Lithuanian subsidiary NORD/LB Lietuva in Vilnius until the end of 2005, before becoming the General Manager of NORD/LB’s New York branch in 2006. In February 2009 he became the Chairman of the Managing Board of the former NORD/LB affiliate DnB NORD in Copenhagen. In 2011 Mr. Bürkle moved to the head office of the NORD/LB Group and led a project to optimise the management of the bank’s risk assets, before he became Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Hypo in July 2012. Mr. Bürkle, who was born in Freiburg, is married and has two children.
NORD/LB has presented in Mr. Bürkle a successor to Dr. Johannes-Jörg Riegler just one week after it was announced that he is moving to BayernLB. “It was vital for us that this strategically important position was not vacant. We are also pleased that we have quickly come to an agreement with our preferred candidate in view of the impending Balance Sheet Assessment by the ECB,” stressed the Chairman of the Managing Board of NORD/LB, Dr. Gunter Dunkel. Mr. Bürkle will take over all of the roles and responsibilities of the Chief Risk Officer. A final decision will be made on departmental responsibilities and who will be Mr. Bürkle’s successor as Chairman of the Managing Board of Deutsche Hypo as soon as possible.
