International presence with north-German focus
NORD/LB is a universal bank at the heart of northern Germany and is clearly focused on its core business with special attention paid to the region. The company's headquarters in Hanover, Braunschweig and Magdeburg mark the roots of the bank in its supporting states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
NORD/LB looks back on a one hundred year old tradition. In 1970, Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale emerged from the merger of four predecessors: Braunschweigische Staatsbank (established in 1765), Hannoversche Landeskreditanstalt (established in 1840), Niedersächsische Landesbank Girozentrale (established in 1917) and Niedersächsische Wohnungskreditanstalt Stadtschaft (established in 1918).
As a commercial bank, we offer an extensive range of financial services to our private, corporate and institutional customers as well as public sector customers. In the area of structured financing, we are involved in ship and aircraft financing and in international projects at select locations in the sectors of energy, infrastructure, industry and real estate. Globally, we are represented in all important trading centres such as London, New York, Shanghai and Singapore through our branches and representative offices.
NORD/LB does business as the Landesbank for Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and assumes the responsibilities of a central bank for savings banks in the federal states of Lower Saxony (43 savings banks, of which 13 are supported by Bremer Landesbank), Saxony-Anhalt (13 savings banks) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (10 savings banks). The NORD/LB Group possesses more than 100 locations in Braunschweig country through Braunschweigische Landessparkasse (an institute in an institute).
As a central bank for savings banks, we are a partner of the savings banks in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Beyond these three federal states, we also operate as a service provider for individual savings banks. Furthermore, in our role as a Girozentrale, we offer all the services that are relevant for the savings banks we support.
Finally, the bank's activities include the development business. Investitionsbank Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt Investment Bank) and Landesförderinstitut Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Development Institute), which belong to the NORD/LB Group, advise the respective state governments. The development banks are also contacts for development questions in their respective federal states: They offer their customers consulting services for all issues related to development and support them in filing applications for programmes.
Our self-conception as a bank is shaped by this regional combination, which is also reflected in our business model. We regularly rework this to react to the constantly changing conditions and to prepare ourselves for new challenges. With our north-German focus and simultaneous international presence, we are well situated and will also be able to successfully address the challenges awaiting us in the future.
In Old Braunschweig country and in northern Germany, we are the market leader for private customers as well as small and medium-sized businesses with roughly 1 million customers thanks to Braunschweigische Landessparkasse (Braunschweig state savings bank) and Bremer Landesbank. We support private customers in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg via NORD/LB Vermögensmanagement Luxembourg S.A.
This business segment comprises Corporate Customers (incl. Agricultural Banking and Housing), customer-oriented financial markets transactions, municipal business, institutional and syndicate business with associated savings banks.
As a full service provider we offer bank products and services, such as traditional transaction management, tailored corporate finance solutions, management of interest and currency risk as well as solutions for company pension schemes.
Since the beginning of the 90s, NORD/LB has done business as a financer in the energy sector and is considered one of the pioneers of wind power financing. Furthermore, bio and solar energy (photovoltaic) have been the focus of our business activities.
In the area of infrastructure, we concentrate on social infrastructure projects such as e.g. the financing of public sector buildings, schools, prisons and social residential housing.
NORD/LB has been doing business in ship financing for over 45 years. Thanks to the long tradition of our commitment to the maritime industry, we have become an international leader in this global market. In the past 20 years, we have established ourselves as one of the market leaders in the area of aircraft financing. We offer our customers a wide range of commercial and covered financing for airplanes and engines.
Currently 100% in the hands of public sector guarantors
Since the merger to create NORD/LB in 1970, the states and savings banks have been behind us. In the beginning, the state of Lower Saxony and the savings banks in Lower Saxony equally divided the shares in NORD/LB. When NORD/LB also became the Landesbank for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt, these two states and their savings bank associations were also added. Since the departure of the state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2005, the ownership structure has looked like this:
North is not only a direction. It's a state of mind.
Confidence, responsibility, sustainability.
Confidence as the result of fair, reliable treatment of each other like partners.
Responsibility as an expression of our mindset of tackling things and producing sustainable success.
Sustainability as our conviction that the balance between economical, ecological and social aspects will make us successful over the long term.
Courage as a sign of our willingness to take risks, develop innovative solutions and design a sustainable future for you to open up more room for action.
Performance as a requirement for our success!
